Intersect

Working largely with patterns on grid paper for most of 2016-2018 I found myself seeking to manifest one of these patterns – these drafts – in a more permanent, physical form. Embroidery intersects with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art; flat enough to mount on your wall, yet you can feel its form between your fingers. Fabric also conveniently forms a grid – the perfect vessel for these ideas.

The first such embroidery was Intersect – a grid of overlapping squares (apt, really). I worked methodically on the vertical to complete the piece, bit by bit, to ensure consistency in execution. The process was slow-going but the results speak for themselves.

I had expected the works to carry more conceptual weight, but really they are a simple realisation of visual ideas. Still, they represent a significant waypoint – a stepping stone on the way to more meaningful works.
